Beads always add a delightful touch, and we offer the finest Japanese and Czech beads to enhance your sewing and embroidery projects. Where possible we have tried to indicate if the bead is safe for hand wash or dry cleaning. The use of the bead will determine it's susceptibility to the problem, i.e. the finish on beads used in necklaces and bracelets worn next to the skin will rub off quicker than those used to embellish a dress. Also, a weak dry cleaning solution may not harm the finish. This is not a guarantee - so if the beads are going on a garment, ALWAYS do a test first to make sure that your beads will stand up to the type of cleaning methods the garment will require. All our beads are glass. Watch out for plastic that can melt in dryers and dissolve in dry cleaning fluid.
We also intend to expand our bead and sequin lines as time goes on. If you are looking for something not listed here, please call as we may have added it to our stock.
Bead Terms:
AB = Aurora Borealis finish Irid = Iridescent
Trans = Transparent Gal = Galvanized
Met = Metallic Finish
11* = Size of Bead (the larger the number the smaller the bead)
S/L = Silver Lined - use for projects that don't need frequent
cleaning
1. Delica -Size 11* - Prices are per 10 gram bag. Japanese Delica
beads are the smoothest, most uniform seed beads available today. They
have flat sides and lay together like little bricks making them delightful
to work with on beading and embellishing projects. On Delica Beads,
a (1) by the number indicates color may fade, a (2) indicates that the
color may rub off and a (3) indicates that the color may change with dry-cleaning.

. Seed Beads
Seed beads from other countries are noted for their rounded edges and shapes. Size 11 seed beads are the most commonly used. These beads are 1.9 mm and can easily be substituted when the bead requirment is for a 2mm bead. Size 8 beads are larger and size 15 are smaller. Seed beads are very effective on all embellishment projects: highlighting the centers of flowers in ribbon embroideries, accenting edges and borders and generally just adding a sparkle where needed. Check out the book section for some wonderful ideas on bead embroidery and beadweaving In this section a letter behind the description will indicate the country of origin: (C) = Czech; (F) = France; (J) = Japan. The details about the finishes of these beads are not as available as those for the Delica beads, so again we stress that you TEST your beads if they are going on a garment that will be washed or dry cleaned on a regular basis. Most beads hold up beautifully. The ones to watch more closely are any silver-lined beads, red beads, or beads with a finish added on the outside.

4. Fresh Water Pearls
Fresh Water Pearls are pearls made by mussels instead of oysters, and are usually grown in rivers. The biggest producers of Fresh Water Pearls today is China. These pearls are available in almost every shape and color, and we try to keep the basic white and cream varieties in stock. Remember, the colors in every lot vary slightly, so always order enough to finish one project. Again, pearls look just beautiful on any embellishment project, but if they are going on clothing, you must consider the cleaning techniques. Pearls will not hold up to dry cleaning, but can probably withstand hand washing. Please TEST!

About Needles and Threads for Beading and Bead Embroidery
A good rule of thumb is to use a needle size that is close in number to the size of the bead, i.e. Size 10 needles work well with size 11 beads. We suggest Milliner needles size 10-12 if you are beading on fabric as they are stronger, don't bend as easily and the eyes are usually small enough to pass through the bead. For smocking ,the best needle is a 9 darner as this needle will accommodate both the thread and the needle's eye. This is only for use with size 11 seed beads. Refer to the Notions section for these types of needles..
For jewelry, beadweaving, or peyote stitch, a strong nylon thread
such as size D Nymo works well, however, since this is a nylon thread it
is not the best choice if you are beading on fabric. For beading fabric,
we recommend a sewing thread that matches the color of the background fabric.
You can use 3-ply silk, waxed cotton, coated quilting, or polyester sewing
thread.
